The Stirling Society of Architects Design Awards have been established with the aim to recognise and promote the creation of good architecture and good design generally – to recognise architects, and clients, who have collaborated in the creation of well designed buildings and to encourage others .

In particular, the awards seek to recognise some of the excellent work created by local architects and created within the Stirling Chapter area comprising Stirling, Falkirk and Clackmannanshire areas. Entries are accepted from any Chartered Architect throughout Scotland who has completed a building in the Chapter area.

STIRLING COUNCIL PLANNING & BUILDING STANDARDS LIAISON MEETING

Stirling Council Planning & Building Standards Liaison Meeting

As part of our Chapter strategy of building better links with statutory authorities we have arranged a liaison meeting with Peter Morgan, Head of Planning and Joyce Wighton, Head of Building Standards at Stirling Council next Thursday afternoon (26 April 2012). As key users of these services it is important that we maintain and improve on our relationship with these essential stakeholders.

In order to inform our meeting with them we would be grateful if members could, prior to next Thursday, provide any comments on the service, any concern or issues with planning and building control in the Stirling area. These could be strategic issues, performance related or specific examples of where projects could have been dealt with in a better way. You may wish us to raise particular issues anonymously

Issues that have been raised to date include performance driven targets, withdraw or refusals, response times, staffing, conservation issues, increasing requirements for Building Warrant approvals and consistency of approach to assessments. No doubt there will be other areas that you can highlight.

To provide your comments please reply to this email or pick up the phone and give me a call. We look forward to your comments.

We hope that this will be the first of a series of regular stakeholder meetings, not just with Stirling Council, but across the Chapter area of Clackmannanshire and Falkirk Council’s also.

STIRLING SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTS SPRING CPD & AGM EVENT

STIRLING SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTS SPRING CPD & AGM EVENT

Our latest event took place on Thursday 22 March 2012 at the Raploch Community Campus, Stirling with our networking lunch, AGM and afternoon of CPD events The event was kindly sponsored by Gartcarron Fire Engineering (www.gartcarronfireengineering.co.uk) A good turnout of members and guests enjoyed an afternoon that was both and informative and useful whilst providing a great way of catching up with other members. Continuing our Chapter tradition we secured the Doolan award winning Gareth Hoskins Architects who presented their very noteworthy work on the refurbishment of the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Go visit! We were also advised of the latest thinking on Fire Engineering and Fire Safety Strategies from the very knowledgeable Sandy Killbourn of Gartcarron Fire Engineering. Our Awards sponsor John Russell of Russwood Timber also provided a lesson on the use of timber & cladding and how not to use timber. Finally Sam Anwar of the Scottish Government Planning Directorate gave an invaluable presentation on the new Householder Permitted Development Regulations on what is and isn’t permitted development in light of the new legislation. (Although I am sure there will be many debates still to be held on this subject with our Planning Colleagues!)

We are keen to ensure that the topics and speakers we provide for these events and would welcome constructive feedback along with any suggestions for future events and subject areas.
